MatterhornΤThis is a Liquid to air exchanger for use with the BiomekΤ FX Liquid handler. Temperature range is 0* to 65° C. A pneumatic vortexor operates at 4-16Psig to provide vortexing in the wells of plates located inside the thermal well.

Automated Use:Edit the plate ALP height for the location at which the Matterhorn resides in the BFX software.You can also do this by increasing the Plate definition height Z + ~11.00 mm. Seating depth of various plate types varies.

Do not loosen or remove any of the sealed fittings or plugs.

recirculating chiller connections are as follows: Cut and Clamp the Ό " tubing between the device and the Recirculator. Flow direction is not critical. (figure 2). Locate the ALP in a location that it does not encounter any obstructions. Condensate will build up on the latex tubing route accordingly. Typically up to 3 units can be ganged together on one recirculator in a parallel arrangement.

Operation: recirculating refrigerator bath.

Use a 60% glycol mixture in the recirculator reservoir. Allow the recirculator to reach the setpoint temperature, ~30 minutes for the Low side. It is best to measure the temperature right at the plate with a non-contact thermometer if the control is critical. You can also use a condensate wrap or insulation around the perimeter if required. It Is best if the unit does not remain on at less than freezing temperatures for periods greater than 24 hours, as frost will build up and affect plate positioning.

 

Installation: Pneumatic Vortexor

As in figure 2. The air supply is introduced through the Ό barbed fitting. The latex tubing should be affixed using the Tywrap provided. This will insure safe operation at the maximum system pressure of 14 Psig. A regulator for controlling the pressure should be placed upstream along with a shutoff valve. If using a pump do not exceed the 14 psig. Rating. A good pump to use is the GAST large dry diaphragm pump. Model # DOA-P104-AA available through various vendors and lab supply houses. This pump has good vernier pressure control.

Operation: Pneumatic Vortexor

Adjust the pressure to initiate and achieve the desired mixing action. In some environments the exhaust muffler is to noisy. Under these conditions you can route the exhaust via tubing to a vent or hood to reduce ambient noise. You will always hear the vortexor. Pipetting directly into the wells of a plate while the vortex is in operation can easily be achieved. If the vortexing is to aggressive then, small eddy currents will occur in the wells especially square wells. You may have to compromise on the adjustment to achieve good results.
